The Village
The village is located 15 km west of Chios Town. It is built on top of a hill and its first inhabitants were traced back in the 11th century. The surrounding area is covered with mastic trees and olive groves. The houses are built of stone and most of them are in ruins while others were restored by their owners. Today, there are 85 people living in Avgonyma, most of whom are engaged in agriculture. Though the village does not have a significant monument, the traditional houses with great architecture, the charming cobbled roads, and the taverns boast a romantic atmosphere to the village while preserving its Medieval ambiance. Avgonyma has two taverns. "Pyrgos" on the square, we like their goat dish. "To Asteri" at the edge of the village, with a fantastic sunset-view to the sea.
