The small island of Psara is located about 20 kilometers west of Chios. Psara has played a significant role in the Greek independence struggle against the Ottomans. This ended in the massacre of Chios, 1822. Today, Psara is inhabited by about 800 people. Due to the still intact fishing ground, many people work as fishermen. Famous and recommended is the locally caught lobster (Taverna To Iliovasilema). The "Monastery of the Assumption of Mary" in the northern mountains is worth seeing. Wonderful clean and secluded beaches invite you to swim.
